A flavorful dish featuring seared tuna steaks topped with a rich tomato and olive sauce, perfect for a quick Mediterranean-inspired meal.

Ingredients

olive oil

  • 5 tbsp olive oil (divided)

onion

  • 1 large onion (chopped)

garlic

  • 3 cloves garlic (minced)

canned tomatoes

  • 1 28 oz whole tomatoes (drained and chopped, preferably San Marzano)

black olives

  • 1 cup black olives (pitted, left whole or sliced)

basil

  • 2 tbsp fresh basil (chopped)

Italian parsley

  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley (chopped, plus more for garnish)

tuna steaks

  • 4 5 oz tuna steaks

kosher and ground black pepper

  • kosher and ground black pepper (to taste)

capers

  • 4 tsp capers (nonpareil, drained)

Instructions 

  • Heat 2 tbsp olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add onion and cook until soft, about 3 minutes.
  • Add garlic and cook until golden, about 2 minutes. Stir in tomatoes, olives, basil, and parsley; cook until thickened, 10-15 minutes. Remove from heat.
  • Season tuna steaks with salt and pepper. In another skillet, heat remaining 2 tbsp olive oil over medium-high. Cook tuna 2-3 minutes per side until lightly browned.
  • Pour sauce over tuna, add capers, and cook 3-5 minutes. Serve garnished with parsley.

Notes

Serve immediately with crusty bread or over rice for a complete meal.
