Tender, flavorful beef short ribs seasoned with Chinese Five Spice and glazed with a smoky BBQ sauce, perfect for grilling or oven roasting.

Ingredients

Meat

  • 3 pounds bone-in pasture-raised beef short ribs
  • 1 ½ teaspoons Chinese Five Spice
  • ¾ teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 ½ teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 tablespoon avocado oil or melted ghee (for greasing baking sheet)
  • ½ cup tomato paste, unsweetened and unsalted
  • ¼ teaspoon all-natural liquid smoke (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • 2 tablespoons coconut aminos
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • ¼ cup filtered water
  • 1 teaspoon granulated monk fruit sweetener (optional)

Instructions

  • Remove ribs from refrigerator 1 hour before cooking to come to room temperature. Preheat oven to 275°F (135°C).
  • Mix spices, pat ribs dry, coat with spice rub. Bake on a lined tray for 1 hour.
  • Prepare BBQ sauce by simmering tomato paste, liquid smoke, spices, coconut aminos, vinegar, and water for 10-15 minutes. Stir in sweetener if using.
  • Flip ribs, return to oven, bake for 55 minutes. Brush with sauce, then broil at 450°F (230°C) for 3-5 minutes to crisp edges.
  • Serve immediately. For grilling, cook ribs on medium-high heat for 3-4 minutes per side, then coat with sauce and crisp for 1 minute per side.

Notes
