Ingredients

Filling

  • 6 cups peeled and diced Golden Delicious apples (about 4 medium)
  • 3 tablespoons sweetened dried cranberries
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground allspice
  • Pinch kosher salt

Topping

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 3 tablespoons cold unsalted butter (cubed)
  • 1/2 cup whole milk

To serve

  • Vanilla frozen yogurt or ice cream (to serve)

Instructions 

  • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • Mix apples and filling ingredients; spread in a sprayed baking dish.
  • Whisk dry topping ingredients; cut in butter until coarse crumbs.
  • Stir in milk to form sticky dough; tear into 6 pieces and drop over filling.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes until browned and bubbly.
  • Serve warm with vanilla frozen yogurt or ice cream.

Notes

For best results, use firm apples and ensure butter is cold for flaky topping.
